A little history

Chamonix, a scientific hub !
The tight scientific links with Chamonix Mont-Blanc started in 1786 with an expedition financed by the Genevan scientist Horace Bénédict de Saussure. This was the first ascent of Mont Blanc which was headed by two Chamonix locals ; a crystal seeker and a doctor. The theory behind the great glaciation of the Quaternary period was quickly formed and the first observatories were born, built under the Mont Blanc summits in order to study the physical phenomena linked to this altitude.
This infatuation by scientists for the extraordinary natural laboratory that the Mont-Blanc represents has not faded. Regularly, scientists and academics meet in Chamonix to carry out the latest research and to try and anticipate the main trends for the future. Their efforts cover all possible fields of investigation and observation from the laws of physics and chemistry in these elevated regions to the study of the body's reactions in altitude and also to the effect on the ecosystem, the glaciers, the weather...
